Poppy – Spit

Poppy was a child when she first discovered Kittie through her older brother. “There was a lot of power in what they had to say, and I felt that even before I could really relate to the stories they were telling,” Poppy revealed in an interview with MetalHammer. “Their story and how they came to be is really inspiring to me as a female artist. I think it’s really great that they’re still making music.”

Years later, after posting snippets of the song to social media in 2022, she unleashed her cover of “Spit” on May 3, 2023. The industrialized and Poppy-fied version takes the late 90s nu-metal anthem and modernizes it uniquely and urgently. Alongside the cover is a music video directed by Jim Louvau, where Poppy matches the gravity of the song through flashing lights and shaky camera angles. Poppy performed “Spit” live for the first time on August 18, 2023, at the Showbox SoDo in Seattle, Washington.

Kittie's debut album Spit and its title track launched the group into nu-metal stardom in 1999, reaching far outside of Canada to garner worldwide attention. Morgan Lander, vocalist and guitarist of Kittie, also spoke with MetalHammer about Poppy’s interpretation, stating, “That was such a full-circle moment for me. I remember watching the video and crying. I couldn’t believe that, after all this time, there were still young people discovering our music, connecting with it. I was honoured. And it’s an incredibly cool cover. It’s definitely different, but that’s Poppy, right? If Kittie have inspired her, then I’m very happy about that.”
