Meg Myers – A New Society
At only 19 years old, Meg Myers released her monumental debut album Sorry, leaving hits such as the title track and “Desire” to climb the charts and become permanent playlist staples. Then 2018 brought her sophomore work, Take Me To The Disco. However, the next Meg Myers album would not be released for almost half a decade.
Myers spent the time carefully crafting TZIA piece by piece. In an interview with Soundsphere, she revealed, “I found over the four-year writing and recording process that there were so many different aspects of me that needed to be felt, heard and expressed. A lot of repressed emotions and insecurities came to the surface and I created a really safe space for them to be experienced and then alchemized through turning them into art.” She continued, “Through acknowledging darkness and the hidden pain I had been running from for so long, I was really able to transmute that into self awareness and victory and really rise up and overcome a lot of my fears.”
Prior to the album's release, she gave fans a taste of her new sound with “Sophia (114)” featuring Nicole Perretti, “Children of Light II,” and “HTIS (Hiding That I’m Sexual)” featuring Lunda Shadows and Carmen Vandenberg of Bones UK. The singles amassed millions of streams and views on YouTube as well as critical acclaim.
Myers revealed, “TZIA is the manifestation of a 4-year-long journey of healing, existential awakening, transformation, and rebirth. I am so grateful to be able to share this light and the insights I have gained with you through this exploration and expression of my deepest and most raw and honest feelings that have emerged from this period of self-reflection.”
On March 24, 2023, Meg Myers delivered TZIA alongside a music video for track two, “A New Society.” The track arrived, begging for a brand-new world with peace at its core rather than fear. Its music video, directed by Nas Bodago, depicts Myers at a piano before dancing in front of various images and patterns. The moving track is completed by its chorus, reading “There will be no violence / Or fear of the police / No one will be silenced / A new society.”
Speaking on the song, Myers stated, “‘A New Society’ is a protest song about the breakdown in humanity and collapsing of old systems as we shift into a new era and build structures based upon truth and love instead of manipulation and control. I feel strongly that what we write about has the ability to manifest into our physical reality, and so my intention with this song is for it to be the conscious planting of a seed that continues to grow for generations to come.”
