Face Yourself – Predatory
Following “Sideration,” in March of 2025, Face Yourself unleashed their next brutal offering from their EP Martyr. “Predatory” explores a vulnerable modern story through deep-sea and shark metaphors. Lyrics such as “Fierce jaws snap in a deadly ballet” detail the betrayal through Yasmine Livemeaux's vicious vocal performance. The single features the band's iconic blend of MySpace-era elements and current sound, which cement them as a staple in the realm of modern deathcore.
Upon release, the band stated, “Face Yourself is proud to release our newest single ‘Predatory,’ alongside the announcement of our new EP ‘Martyr” via Sumerian Records. ‘Predatory’ is based on a modern story with some metaphoric images. It’s about going to a dance with a stranger and quickly finding yourself in a dangerous situation. ‘Martyr’ explores struggles through difficult mental health battles. The lyrical content on the EP is based on vulnerability, and confronting your own demons. The record flirts between standing up for yourself, but also getting back to this dark place, as no one has a perfect linear mental health. Sometimes it takes a few trials to heal old wounds. With our producer Joey Sturgis, we tried to translate the theme through the impacts, melodies, vocals, making those emotions loud.”
The accompanying music video, directed by Eric DiCarlo, opens to Livemeaux submerged underwater as a shark inches closer to her. Before it reaches her, it cuts to the band’s performance in a blue room in front of water imagery. The energy is held at a maximum between clips of the breathtaking performance and Livemeaux in the water. Close-ups of the shark's jaws and shots of blood in the water build the intensity, growing further as the band’s blue surroundings turn red.
Martyr arrived the following month, on April 18, 2025. Joey Sturgis, known for his work with Asking Alexandria, Of Mice & Men, and The Devil Wears Prada, took charge of producing the EP. The introspective collection tackles mental battles and emotional vulnerability in the most brutal way possible.
