Betraying The Martyrs – Let It Go
After the release of Disney’s Frozen in 2013, “Let It Go” was everywhere, from grocery stores, singing Elsa dolls, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song, to gaining its very own Betraying The Martyrs cover in 2014. The cover was released a day prior to the band’s studio album Phantom, where it landed as track four.
“Our label suggested it,” Frontman Aaron Matts explained to Louder Sound. “The song had been winning Oscars, it’s everywhere and it’s got a solid melody. It might scare off some old-school metal fans but I think it’s gonna bring in younger fans. That song kept me awake for days… those melodies were stuck in my head!”
The cover went viral, amassing over nine million views on YouTube. Accompanying the genre-bent cover is a music video, including the snowflakes and ice themes from the original 2013 global hit. The band members are depicted performing in front of a white backdrop while scenes of ice crystals, black smoke, and frozen flowers cycle throughout. Betraying The Martyrs keeps the strong melodic elements of the song while allowing heavy metalcore elements to persevere through its blastbeats, screams, guitars, and breakdown. By putting their own spin on “Let It Go,” they truly made the song their own.
