AlienBlaze – Enemies With Benefits
Growing up with a mom obsessed with grunge and a dad immersed in 70s rock, the alternative world has never been alien to AlienBlaze. At 13, she developed an illness that led her to miss almost three years of school. In desperate need of an outlet, her mom presented her with her old Gibson U2. Through countless hours of practicing guitar, along with teaching herself vocals and production, her songwriting began and evolved quickly.
Her blend of styles comes from all corners of her upbringing and media consumption, from music to autobiographies. She spoke to Kerrang! about her multi-genred approach to her artistry, revealing, “I’ve read so many books to really learn my craft, everything from every genre, which is why I consider my music genre-fluid because I take inspiration from everywhere,” she says. “I consider it a rock hybrid.”
In 2019, AlienBlaze appeared on streaming platforms for the first time, garnering widespread attention and reposts from celebrities such as Oli Sykes. Becoming a sought-after artist, she found a home in Sumerian Records by 2022.
In August of 2023, AlienBlaze entered her "villain era” with “Enemies With Benefits.” The track was the third released under Sumerian, following “Not Yours Never Was” and her collaboration with OmenXIII, “Lovesick.”
“Enemies With Benefits” takes her melodrama and amps it to 100 with lyrics such as, “I want to stamp all over your ego with my platform heel…” and “I’ll break a champagne glass over your head.” The dynamic contrast between the pop-infused verses and the driving guitars mirrors the lyrics in demonstrating the love-hate relationship between the enemies.
“This is one of my favourite songs I’ve written, so I hope my audience will love the new record as much as I do.” AlienBlaze reveals, “I guess I’m in my ‘villain era’ now with this song. I drew a lot of inspiration from watching the fluctuation of relationships in ‘Gossip Girl’, and so to a degree this song is an empowered breakup record, whether that be in a friendship or a relationship or whatever.”
