Eva gave up her life as a travel writer to have a child with her husband. However, the pregnancy does not go smoothly. She eventually gives birth to a baby boy, one whom she cannot seem to bond with, no matter her struggle to. While her child, Kevin, fusses and gives Eva a difficult time, he behaves as a happy, loving son in front of his father, who then dismisses Eva’s concerns.
Despite her attempts, Kevin grows from a difficult toddler to a sociopathic teen. Eva is forced to deal with her son's dangerous words and actions. He grows violent toward his younger sister, leading to turmoil within the family. However, Kevin was just getting started, and his violence increases with his age, leaving Eva to deal with the horrific aftermath.
